School Internship Games January 2023: It's a wrap!

We can’t believe it’s already over again: For three weeks in January, 16 students from Hamburg schools participated in the School Internship Games at three different studios in Hamburg as well as the HAW University of Applied Sciences.

The joint internship program helps 9th grade students to get a realistic impression of what it’s like to work in the games industry, learn about different job profiles and career paths and get to know games companies from Hamburg.

At InnoGames, Fishlabs and Goodgame Studios, the student group peeked behind the scenes of game production and met professionals from Game Design, Art, Development, Data Analysis, Balancing, IT management, QA and Sound Design. At HAW HamburgUniversity of Applied Sciences, the students also learned about options for training, for example the Games Master course or studying illustration.

But at the heart of the program was: Trying it out yourself! Every day, the students acquired new skills and put them to work, building their own first games and adding them to a portfolio. During the whole program, the participants were accompanied by media educators from the Initiative Creative Gaming. The 26th of January then marked the end of the program, with the final presentation at InnoGames where the students presented what they’ve learned and achieved in the three weeks – and we have to admit: It was pretty impressive! We’ll be happy to see some of the young games enthusiasts again in Hamburg’s games industry in a few years!

The School Internship Games is a joint initiative of Hamburg-based games companies, the regional chapter of the industry association game, the HAW Hamburg and the Initiative Creative Gaming. It was started in 2021 and so far, the program saw three runs, with InnoGames, Fishlabs, Goodgame Studios and Tivola Games as industry partners.

The next School Internship Games is planned for summer 2023. Application dates and more details will be shared on as well as on our Gamecity website and social media channels and in our monthly newsletter.
